27 January 2010
Happy Hump Day, everyone! ^_^
Now, before you get all excited, the phrase 'hump day' does not refer to a day filled with sexual intercourse --- Contrary to what I thought upon hearing about it for the first time. >_>;
No, it simply refers to the fact that today, being Wednesday, is the middle of the week ... Meaning that you've made it 'over the hump', and that the weekend isn't nearly as far away as it seemed on Monday! And of course, the way to celebrate this is by uttering the phrase 'Happy Hump Day!' in a boisterous tone to as many unaware strangers as possible.
In all honesty, I suppose you could accompany the phrase with a physical hump or two, but, er ... Be sure you have a good lawyer before attempting this. And don't forget to let said lawyer know that I'm not to be held accountable for your humpin' actions, got it? With that said, let's quickly move on to the updates before things start gettin' freaky ... o_O;
I added two returning Affies to the Affiliates page --- Lotte and Sally. *^^* Be sure to welcome them back properly by giving both of their sites a visit and a comment or two! ^_~
I updated the Favourite TV Shows section of my Facts page with a couple of new shows, including My Name Is Earl! I definitely recommend the series if you've never seen it before ... It's totally hilarious! ^o^
I was able to check two more items off of my Wishlist that I've been lusting after for quite awhile now ... A pair of faded black denim skinny jeans, and a book entitled The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong. Fashion and fiction FTW! o_o
And now that we've got those taken care of, let's move onto this week's first blog topic: The auction I won on eBay yesterday! If you follow my Tweets, you'll already have heard a little bit about this ... However, I never revealed what, exactly, I was bidding on! ^_~
Before I get to that, though, just know that winning this auction was no easy task! The last two minutes were, in every sense of the phrase, an absolute bidding war. @_@;
Thankfully though, Skelly was quick enough to keep up ... Otherwise, I doubt I would've won at all, as I have a feeling the opposing bidder was willing to bid loads more than I ever could've. #_#; In the end, though, I managed to submit the winning bid ... With only thirteen seconds left to spare! Whew. x_x;
By now, though, I'm sure you dying to know what it is I won ... So without further ado, I present to you my newest ((Soon to arrive in the mail)) Materialistic possession:
A gently used, 7.1 megapixel, Olympus FE 210 digital camera! Sound familiar? If you're a long time visitor to mallorymaloney.com, it just might --- As it's the exact same model of camera that I lost during the Green Day concert I attended last year!
In case you're not familiar with the story, and you're not keen on the idea of going through an Updates/Blog entry consisting of nearly ten thousand words to find out, here's a quick recap of what happened:
... When I wasn't using ((my digital)) camera, I kept shoving it into the tiny front pocket of the black denim shorts I was wearing under my tutu. Why would I do such an irresponsible thing, I hear you ask? Why, I needed my hands free so I could clap on Billie Joe's command, of course ((...)) As you've likely guessed, my blind devotion to Billie Joe caused me to lose aforementioned digital camera sometime during the first half of the concert ...
So, ((Zero thanks to Billie Joe,)) I finally decided that since I was extremely fond of the original camera, I'd simply purchase another one on eBay! Of course, until I'm actually holding the camera in my hands, I'm not going to get too excited --- Just in case it gets lost, stolen, or the seller decides to rip me off --- But considering I've used this model before, I will add that I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a decent camera under a hundred dollars!
If you need any examples of photo quality, feel free to check out my Photographs page --- The 28 March 2009, 31 March 2009, and 17 June 2009 sets were all taken with my lost Olympus FE 210, and as you can see, the quality is fantastic!
Speaking of recommendatory items, let's move on to mallorymaloney.com's third mascara mini review! This time 'round, I'm going to be reviewing NYX's Doll Eye Volume Mascara, in Extreme Black. Click the thumbnail below to see a slightly bigger image of the product's packaging!
First, though, I feel the need to stress that the NYX makeup brand is in no way related to the similarly named makeup brand NYC. ((Which is short for New York Color.))
Now, I don't know if anyone else has ever made this misconception, but for years I assumed NYX was merely a branch of NYC, like Rimmel and Rimmel London, or L'Oréal and L'Oréal Paris. Due to this false conception, I always stayed as far away as from NYX as possible, because, as even the most inexperienced makeup user knows, NYC is quite possibly the shittiest makeup brand in the entire world ... Aside from maybe Wet N' Wild.
I also found out that I had been pronouncing NYX incorrectly for ages, as well! x_x; I figured it was pronounced like an acronym, the way NYC is --- But this isn't true. It's pronounced like an actual word, something I discovered after visiting the About NYX page on NYXCosmetics.Ca ...
The name NYX comes from the ancient Greek Goddess, NYX, who ruled the night.
Along with an article I stumbled across online ...
... NYX stands for the Goddess of the Night in greek mythology. It is pronounce ((sic)) niks and, by way of metaphor, symbolizes the people who wear NYX cosmetics - goddesses in today's night (or day) scene ...
Not to mention the fact that Dictionary.Com agrees that the pronunciation for Nyx is, indeed, 'niks'. o_o; Going by all this, I think it's safe to say that one should never refer to the brand as 'en why ex', haha.
But enough about that --- Let's continue on with the mascara mini review! ^^; As I mentioned earlier, we're gonna be checking out NYX's Doll Eye Volume Mascara, in Extreme Black.
Which, as I'm sure you've already guessed from clicking the thumbnail above, is totally awesome! I will be honest, though --- It's not quite as awesome as the two previous mascaras I've reviewed, ((L'Oréal's Double Extend Beauty Tubes and Maybelline's Lash Stiletto,)) But it's still pretty damn good.
It feels lovely going onto your lashes, ((Very silky and smooth,)) It has magnificent staying power, ((I've worn it all day dozens of times, and not once have I had a problem with bleeding or flaking,)) It's not too difficult to remove at the end of said day, ((It comes off in little tube like pieces, similar to how L'Oréal's Double Extend Beauty Tubes does, actually,)) And the price is extremely reasonable. ((Under ten dollars in Canadian funds!)) I also love the packaging and the way the brush is designed.
I have found a few flaws with it, though --- For one thing, it seems to be more of a length enhancer than a volume booster; For another, it tends to clump if you use the tip of the brush in an attempt to be more precise; And lastly, you have to use more than one coat to get a noticeable effect ... Unless you're going for a more 'natural' look with your makeup.
Which is an insanely ridiculous concept, BTW. I mean, really ... The word 'natural' and the word 'makeup' in one sentence? That's nothing but an oxymoron! -_-; In my opinion, the only way one could achieve a 'natural' look is by wearing absolutely no makeup whatsoever.
Don't get me wrong, though! If putting on concealer, foundation, powder, a neutral eyeliner and/or eyeshadow, a bit of mascara, some blush, and a slightly tinted lip product every day is your thing, then that's completely cool ... But please don't claim that this is a 'natural' look.
It is by no means natural in any way, shape, or form, and if you attempt to declare that this is so, I will saw off all of your fingers one by one.
Slowly. =_=

Happy belated hump day, Mal ;D
Currently, I'm sitting in college being really conscientious, texting two wonderful men and listening to Lozz's social commentary on everyone that walks past. Your blogs really do amuse me, you know.
I've been really tired and ill, so I think I'll just leave this comment short cause otherwise I'll end up whinging.
Love you!
K x
Haha, I wish I'd read this yesterday... I would have greeted the newspaper staff with "Happy Hump Day" before our meeting commenced. XD
I'm so glad you won the bid! That is an awesome camera! I laughed at the bit where you're not holding your breath... I know how that is, especially with ebay. Love the products, hate The Man.
Must try the mascara! I'm still wearing my MaxFactor stick to a dry, inkless pulp. P.S. Covergirl and Love My (insert part of face here i.e. lips, nails, etc) are the shittiest makeup brands ever. I can't stand them!
i was wondering what it was you had won on the ebays. you were not telling us on twitter on purpose!! you little minx!
Nice job on winning the bidding on the camera! I've never bid on Ebay before, maybe I'll try it. I always figured I wouldn't win cuz I'm too poor. :P
I like NYX's prices, I've been eyeing them for a while now. It did make your lashes crazy long! I wonder what would happen if you put on the NYX mascara and then put a more "plumping" one over it.
I'm always tempted to say "Happy Humpity Hump Day for some reason.
Hah! happy 'hump day'? LOL... NYX? I've never heard about that brand... ++ Shaina i don'tthink nails are a part of your face tho.. : *
Hehe... But I've heard that their products are pretty crappy... XD
Lovely camera, I'm sure you'll be glad to have it again!
Aww...I totally thought hump day meant something else ;) Lol
Congrats on winning the awesome camera! I've lost cameras at concerts as well, most of the time they were taken from me by security. I was pissed as HELL when they took my camera at the Pumpkins show because I had gotten some really kick ass shots of Billy Corgan >:/
I've never heard of NYX makeup brand. Maybe I'll have to try it out :)
Well danr i'm two days late for hump day.anywya godo tips on makeup,i seldomly wear unless i go somewhere, but it's good to know not all makesup are completely crappy.how's the new layout coming?how are you?
Congrats on buying the Camera. I'm sorry you lost your last one.
As for NYX I have never heard of the brand and barely wear mascara(because mine tends to clump). Though I think it looks pretty good for a minimal look. That's what I call the"natural" make up look...minimal. Honestly i don't wear makeup everyday(you can probably tell in my 365). So I agree that it dosen't make since to call it natural.
Good lord, I was scared when I read "Happy Hump Day". I'm glad that got cleared up. O_O
If you don't get the camera from the person, you should saw their fingers off one by one. ;)
I don't wear makeup. I don't really like to... and I don't have any, anyway. But I should because my face is super red. Stupid rosacea. XP
Ooh poop. Well, I was pretty complicated with this layout so that's probably why IE is being such a ho. I think it's mainly the old versions though!
Oh I didn't know that! "Takeout" sounds odd. :P
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I really like to be praised for what I do (but not excessively) so it makes me angry when my mum just rambles and rants about what I DON'T do! We are absolutely in the same boat. She asks "what housework did you do today?" and then rambles on about what I did not do! T_T
OHH! I absolutely remember you sneaking that camera into the concert but unfortunately losing it. It makes me think of in the future, when I go to concerts, how I would sneak a little something in. I know I have a camera on my iPhone now, but it's not the same as an actual camera!
I have never bought off ebay but let's hope you get the camera in good condition!
Hump day eh? I find this amusing. XD
I would have thought "NYX" was en-why-ex, primarily because it's in capitals. :S But at least you got that cleared up.
Makeup is most certainly not natural, but I believe you can wear makeup in such a way that it's not ridiculously piled on and "looks" natural. Of course it's not because your eyelashes are probably secretly jazzed up - but you can "make yourself look good without piling it on", so to speak. ^^
Congrats on buying the new camera. It sucks you lost your other one. Maybe you'll put more pictures up when you get it?
Any day can be hump day with dedication and a willing partner ;-)
Hello there :D Thank you for the comment (:
LOL, happy hump day? I'll totally use that from now on. And congrats on getting the camera you wanted btw =D
God, I envy you for your long blog entries. My life's so boring that I can only update a short entry once a week. Anyway, I just took a look at your autobiography, and the story behind your name totally fascinates me haha. (yesyes, I read everything because I have no life) Your parents are cool.
i thought the same about hump day when i first heard it too. congrats on winning the camera, i love getting a good deal on something i'd previously lost. thank you for updating my link as well, i appreciate it.
Hooray for getting your camera! :D
NYX cosmetics are amazing. It's one of the only brands of eyeshadow that I use, because their pigments are incredible. My favourite of course is the red, or "cherry." :) I thought that NYX was a branch of NYC as well... then I learned that they're actually somehow affiliated with MAC. Which... is one of the best makeup brands in the world, so it's got to be good. LOL.
I just recently started using that Lash Stilleto mascara... that stuff is amazing. I was using the Glam Eyes by Rimmel London before, but it just doesn't compare. LOL.
I always thought "natural makeup" meant just... slight enhancement to your natural features. Like... mascara to make your eyes pop, some foundation to smooth the complexion and that was about it. Seems kind of like a ridiculous term.
I'm going to say "Happy Hump Day!" every week now :) I love surprising people in the most unusual way :P
Congrats on winning the 'bidding war'! It's a shame my item on ebay isn't as popular :(
I hope all goes well with the delivery of your camera ;) I've heard horrible stories about scams, but I shan't get into that as it's usually items bided for thousands of dollars. ;P
The meaning of the name is quite smart, however I guess they didn't think of the confusion with NYC. >_>
ha, I would have to agree with you on how 'natural looking make-up' is a complete oxymoron. But I suppose consumers get the drift. Nude lipstick for example is more 'natural looking' than bright red lipstick.
Hump day. Hah. That's funny. I'm going to use that excuse from now on, on Wednesdays, with my boyfriend. So I can rape him. :)
Yay. You won the bidding war! I hate bidding wars. I never win. I blame on the crappy refresh rates. Heh.
LOL. Hump day xD
How shittyabout your camera =\ Glad you could get a new one though :3 I've managed to destroy my camera's LCD screen o_0 I can still take photos, I just can't see half of it from this gigantic crack :S
Awesome review :3 Too bad I don't wear mascara, I get my eyelashes tinted and only wear mascara in emergencies :)
Ooh that is awesome that you won a camera!
YOU CAN HAVE MY FINGERS, I DON'T NEED THEM. I'LL TYPE WITH A FRIGGEN STICK IN MY MOUTH.
You can do Natural make-up.
For most people, makeup is to cover up the flaws/imperfections that you don't like about your skin.
So really, Natural makeup would = not being to tell you're wearing it.
Like a little concealer or light foundation to even out zee skin tone.
Because, I myself - look rather sickly without makeup on. Mainly because I have kind of a darker ring around/under my eyes. So, unlike my daily look - I'd leave the eye makeup out of the picture. Except for a little mascara cause my eyes look soooooooooooo freakin' tiny w/o anything.
I want to buy the NYX mascara just because of the pretty design, box and name! How awesomely gothic to name a mascara NYX and put BATS on it! O_O Gimme!!!
I wholeheartedly agree with you about the whole "natural make-up" deal. Natural is au naturelle meaning no make-up. That's natural.
LOL HUMP DAY. XD
THAT MADE ME LOL.
..Which is why I said LOL.
Now I have said LOL three times which I think is quite enough. Now that's four.. Wait a minute, you can never have too much LOLs!
*ahem* Hi.
Aaaaaahh! That's a good buy, you got there. ;) I haven't bidded much on eBay, just a few posters and a CD.. I got stressed out that I wouldn't win, even though no-one else was even Bidding on the item, LOL. I won. O:)
And that mascara looks good :O I'd buy it if I could actually find it, I don't think that make of make-up is here... Or I'm just really un-observant. XD I really need a new mascara, mines is shit and it doesn't even look like I'm wearing any, then when I put on more it turns out all lumpy ... I actually gave myself a fright once, cos I thought I had a spider in my eye, LOL.
I dunno why there would be a spider in my eye or how one would manage to get there. Oh well. BYE!
LOL Hump Day!! xD that's funny
Anywhoo, congratulations on winning the camera :) And pwning the rest of the bidders ^^ LOL
eBay is epic (: I honestly have no idea what I'd do without it. The last thing I bought was a game for my Nintendo DS. (Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town) It's really fun. You get to make your own person and get married. It's addicting ^^
I need new mascara D: Mine's starting to get all weird and clumpy. That mascara looks good :D I'll have to try it out sometime. I currently use Maybelline. It gives good definition and makes my lashes look full. Except it clumps sometimes, which is one thing I absolutely despise about it -.-
Finally you got a camera! I remember you were writing that someone got it and didn't want to give back or something like that?
I ove mascara ^^
It usually make the lashes seem onger or boost the volume.. it is never both of them in one unfortunatelly!
I just pick the volume booster because my lashes are long. Just find what works better.. but don't do the test thing at the store.. full of germs V_V
That's weird you pictured me as the exact opposite haha :P I would post pictures but you never know what creeps are lurking *cough* Yeah I have you on MSN but to be honest, I'm never on either. I hate the 30 second "hi" "how are you" "good, you" "good" sort of conversations..
Lovee your camera. I have some sort of Olympus too and it's really good quality!
Your eyelashes definitely look like they belong to a Goddess of the night ahahah :P I believe Rimmel is the bestest mascara, I always have and always will use it. I have virtually albino eyelashes and when I wear it...it's like I become human.
And I completely agree!!!! Natural look = NO makeup!!!! I hate it on Youtube when the make-up gurus apply five inches of foundation for that "natural" look! It's so stupid. No make-up can ever look natural because it's NOT!
Hi Mallory! Sorry I haven't posted a comment recently x3, I've been so busy!
LOL, hump day... Am I bad that I thought you were on about sexual intercourse at first?!
Hahaha! I feel so perverted now... LOL.
I'm liking the camera too.
Oh, you have lovely eyelashes too!
xoxo.
